Kilic Kalkan (Sword and Shield)

Kilic Kalkan literally translated "Sword Shield" is the general term used to identify several sword arts within the GokNur System.  Sword arts within the system are divided into two distinct sections:
  1. Tek El:  Single hand sword arts use a sword in the dominant hand, supplemented with a shield on another.  There are two main types of Tek El swords, Kilic and Yatagan.
  2. Cift El:  Double hand sword arts uses a mostly heavyer sword held with both hands.   Cift El swords are called Pala for the curved blade swords and Duz Kilic as a general name for straight blade swords.

Scabbard of the sword or Kin, can also be used in attack and defense.

In GokNur System, regardless of type of sword used there are eight basic directions of cut and eight basic directions of defense:


Kalkan, or shield used in GokNur Training is circular in nature.  It is worn on the non-dominant side by means of looping the forearm and hand through the back of the shield. 

Kalkan practitioner uses the Four Corners Principle to guard and protect High, Low, Left and Right.  Kalkan techniques are the same when used in conjunction with Topuz (Mace) or Balta (Battle Axe).
